- Energy: Conversion to biomass
- Present since: 2025
- Installed capacity: 14 MW
In January 2025, Albioma completed its acquisition of Energies Saint-Martin, which owns Unit 2 of the only power plant in the French part of Saint-Martin. This unit is owned by Albioma and operated by EDF SEI.
The power station dates back to 2003 and now runs on FOD. The Group is working on converting the plant to liquid biomass, as planned in the Multiannual Energy Programme (MEP).
Island of Saint-Martin: an introduction
Saint-Martin is a French Overseas Collectivity that occupies the northern part of the island of Saint-Martin, while the other part is an autonomous state of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The French part has a population of around 40,000 and consumes up to 30 MW at peak production.
The two parts of the island operate their own electricity grids without interconnection. The French part has a power plant located north of Marigot, near the port of Galisbay, operated by EDF SEI, which is also the grid operator.
The plant has 3 units:
- Unit 1: 16.4 MW,
- Unit 2: Energie Saint-Martin, acquired by Albioma, 14.1 MW,
- Unit 3: 26.1 MW.

Our conversion project
This conversion project is set out in the draft MEP for Saint-Martin. It sets targets for the production of electricity from biomass:
- the construction of a new 15 MW biomass power plant to replace Unit 1, which will be decommissioned by EDF. This project is also being developed by Albioma;
- conversion to liquid biomass and extension of the 14.1 MW Unit 2 acquired by Albioma,
- conversion of EDF’s 26.1 MW Unit 3 to liquid biomass,
- development of storage: 10 MWh by 2028 and 50 MWh by 2033.
EDF’s 2023-2028 Supply-Demand Balance Forecast confirms the need for:
- the renewal of Unit 2, plus an additional 15 to 20 MW of controllable power,
- a 9 MW centralised storage system to control the dynamic stability of the electricity system in a context of greater production variability and improve supply quality.
